Send Push
Oman has announced a major update to its residency regulations, extending the validity of foreign residency cards from three to ten years. The decision, issued by Lieutenant General Hassan bin Mohsin Al Shuraiqi, Inspector General of Police and Customs, amends the executive regulations of the Civil Status Law, according to Atheer newspaper, as reported by Gulf News.

Under the new rules, foreign residents must renew their residency IDs within 30 days of expiry. The government has also set the issuance and renewal fees at five Omani rials per year, while replacement fees for lost or damaged cards will cost 20 rials. Previously, residency cards were issued for periods of one, two, or three years only, following a decision in August 2024.

Expansion of Cultural Visas and Citizenship Updates

This change comes alongside other updates to Oman’s visa and residency framework. The country has expanded its cultural visa program to include spouses and first-degree relatives of the primary visa holder. Additionally, Oman has recently granted citizenship to 45 individuals under the revised Omani Nationality Law.

The extended validity of residency cards is expected to provide greater stability for expatriates living and working in Oman. By simplifying renewal requirements and increasing the validity period, the government aims to reduce administrative burdens and provide long-term security for foreign residents contributing to the country’s economy.

Foreigners in Oman must ensure their residency cards are renewed on time to avoid penalties. The new framework also encourages compliance with local regulations while maintaining flexibility for foreign workers and their families.

This change highlights Oman’s ongoing efforts to attract and retain skilled expatriates and strengthen its position as a regional hub for international professionals. With these reforms, foreign nationals and their families can plan long-term commitments in the country with improved certainty regarding their residency status.
