As the festive season of Diwali fills the air with lights, smoke, and celebrations, doctors are urging parents to take extra care of their newborns. The pollution and noise caused by firecrackers can be harmful to infants, whose lungs, skin, and immune systems are still developing. Exposure to smoke, dust, and loud sounds can lead to breathing issues, allergies, ear damage, and disturbed sleep patterns. Even common festive items like incense sticks, diyas, and scented candles can irritate a baby’s delicate respiratory system.
Dr. Mithul Gupta, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cocoon Hospital, Jaipur, explains that newborns need special protection during Diwali. Parents should keep babies away from the noise and smoke of firecrackers and maintain a clean, airy indoor environment. However, ensure the baby isn’t exposed to cold air or outdoor pollution. If diyas or candles are used, keep them at a safe distance from the baby and avoid lighting them in the same room.
Bright or flashing lights can also strain a baby’s eyes, so keep indoor lighting soft and soothing. Avoid large gatherings or allowing too many people to handle the baby, as this increases the risk of infection. Dress the child in comfortable, warm clothes appropriate for the season, and maintain a consistent feeding and sleeping schedule.
If your baby shows signs of cough, cold, or breathing difficulties, consult a pediatrician immediately.
Key Tips for Parents:
• Keep the baby away from firecracker smoke and loud noise.
• Use an air purifier or place air-purifying plants indoors.
• Avoid incense sticks, perfumes, and scented candles.
• Dress the baby warmly and comfortably.
• Limit guests’ physical contact with the baby.
• Keep the baby’s room clean, ventilated, and calm.
• Seek medical advice promptly if any health issues arise.
