There's not much more frustrating or disappointing than slicing an avocado open just to find it has gone brown and mushy inside. What adds to this frustration is also the fact that they are not the cheapest of grocery items. The price of an avocado in January 2025 reached 91 pence, almost £1 each, meaning there's been a 93% price increase since the start of the millennium. With prices climbing and freshness fleeting, wasting even half an avocado feels like throwing money away.
You may feel like you have tried every tip and trick out there to extend the life of your avocados, from squeezing on lemon juice, to wrapping them tightly in cling film, to storing them with onion slices but there's one lesser-known method that could make a surprising difference. A popular home hack account on Instagram that has amassed over two million followers, jimmy_laura_astuces, has shared one lesser known tip for keeping the other half of your avocado fresh.
In a video posted to their followers, Laura explained that the way you cut your avocado can actually play a big role in how long it stays fresh.
Instead of slicing it the usual way, lengthwise, from top to bottom, she recommended cutting it widthwise, across the middle.
This means that the other half with the seed intact has a smaller exposed surface area and fits better into a small container like a mug.
Laura suggested storing the uneaten half with the seed still in, placed cut-side down inside a mug
This reduces the fruit's contact with air, which helps to slow down oxidation, the process that causes that dreaded browning.
She explained: "It will oxidise more slowly."
