DVLA chiefs stressed road users past their 70th birthday must make sure to renew their driving licence to stay behind the wheel. Before the age of 70, rules state that motorists must renew their licence every 10 years.
However, past the milestone birthday, road users have to refresh their licence every three years, including when they turn 70 for the first time. Excitement around planning for the massive life event could mean road users accidentally miss their licence renewal, with DVLA offering a simple reminder.
The DVLA posted on social media site X: "Are you 70 or over and due to renew your driving licence? Do it for free! Grab a cuppa and renew today at gov.uk/renewat70. It's easy, quick and secure on GOV.UK."
According to the Older Drivers Forum, motorists who ignore the rule and continue to drive without a valid licence could face serious penalties. This is likely to start with a heavy fine but could even see vehicles taken off drivers and seized in a serious blow.
The Older Drivers Forum explained: "Driving licences expire at 70 years of age, so when you reach 70, you need to renew your driving licence if you wish to continue driving. You then need to renew it every three years afterwards.
"The DVLA (or the DVA in Northern Ireland) will send you a reminder and an application form to renew your licence as your 70th birthday approaches and then every three years afterwards when your licence is due for renewal.
"If you do not renew your licence, you will not legally be allowed to drive after your 70th birthday. If you carry on driving, your driving licence and motor insurance would not be valid."
According to GOV.UK, motorists can apply for a licence renewal using the D46P form sent by the DVLA ahead of their 70th birthday. However, road users can also use the D1 application form, which can be picked up from most Post Office stores.
Officials explain that a new driving licence photocard should arrive within three weeks once an application has been submitted. However, experts stress that it might take longer to submit an application if any medical or personal details need to be checked first.
