US President Donald Trump called Charlie Kirk the “greatest evangelist for American liberty,” saying the slain activist has become “immortal.”

Speaking at Kirk’s memorial service on an emotionally charged Sunday evening, Trump said:

"On that terrible day (September 10) our greatest evangelist for American liberty became immortal. He's a martyr now for American freedom. I know I speak for everyone here today when I say that none of us will ever forget Charlie Kirk, and neither now will history."

Trump addressed the massive gathering immediately following remarks from Kirk’s widow, Erika.

In a message to a grieving Erika, the US president vowed to ensure that her two children grow up in a country where their father is “honoured and revered as a great American hero.”

Trump also highlighted what Kirk considered the “biggest decision” of his life: “What was even more important to Charlie than politics and service was the choice he made in the fifth grade — which he called the ‘most important decision of his life’ — to become a Christian and a follower of his saviour, Jesus Christ.”
